Pretty decorative boxes are one of my favorite things to have around the house (usually with other candles or figurines and things like that). Although many times, I like boxes or containers, I‘m not sure exactly what to store inside! It occurred to me that most decorative boxes are actually the perfect size for jewelry boxes, and with a quick adjustment, they can be very useful in the home, and very beautiful!
Supplies:
- Decorative box with lid (I used this, but this would be great too.)
-1/4 yard velvet fabric (this is a good pink option)
- Direct sales and sewing machines
- Hot glue gun or fabric glue
-- Cotton wool
-- Fabric scissors
-- Cutting pad, rotary tool and ruler
First, you‘ll want to fold your batting in half and cut out a piece of batting as wide as your box and long enough to make a 1 inch thick roll of batting when all the batting is rolled up. If you make them about 1 inch wide, then you can figure out how much you need to make to fill your box (5 rolls for a 5-inch wide box, etc.). .
Cut and roll up all your clothes and pin them in place.
Use a cloth tape measure to measure the circumference of the batting roller and add 1/2 inch to the measurement (this will give you a 1/4 inch seam when you sew). Cut your velvet fabric into a rectangle that is 1 inch longer than your roll of cotton wool and the same width as the perimeter found in step 1 above.
Fold your fabric lengthwise (face to face) and pin it in place. Sew the open side with a 1/4 inch seam, then turn the front of the velvet barrel out.
Stuff the cotton wool into the tube (don‘t forget to take the needle out!). And repeat the sewing and filling process for each batting roller.
To close the end, place a wad of hot glue (or quick-drying fabric glue) directly in the middle of the cotton wool end of the velvet tube and fold the bottom of the velvet into the glue. Add more glue, folding one side at a time, then using the last drop of glue to fold the top into place. Repeat the process for the other side of the tube, then repeat for each additional tube.
Place your velvet tube snugly in your box and you have created a new jewelry box!
I kid you not, I love the combination of marble, pink and gold, and of course you can choose any box or color of velvet you like! I have a lot of delicate gold rings, so I have to keep ring plates and boxes around the house, otherwise they will be lost quickly! As you can see, it‘s easy to make your own jewelry holder out of a box you like, and if you change the size of the wadding roll, you can fit more or less into your jewelry. Hopefully this DIY is just what you need to make your space useful and beautiful!
